The Norbury Theatre and Cinema
Droitwich Theatre and Arts Club Ltd was set up in 1962 in order to combine the various dramatic societies in Droitwich Spa, and to set up and run an amateur theatre in the town. The current Friar Street theatre building was opened in February 1963. The Norbury Theatre is affiliated to NODA, and is a Registered Charity
The theatre is run by an elected "Council" taken from the membership. All adult members are eligible to vote at the AGM and to stand for a position on the "Council". There are several Committees who deal with every aspect of the running of the theatre, from Front of House to play selection to the upkeep of the fabric of the building. Every paid-up member is eligible to audition for any of our productions and all members receive audition notices to keep them informed
Run entirely by volunteers, the theatre provides a full programme of productions throughout the year, both by its own members and by visiting groups
The auditorium has 176 tiered seats, all with an unrestricted view of the stage. There is a large orchestra pit below stage level and a reasonably large stage area.We have a modern computerised lighting board and a lighting system which was completely overhauled and updated in 2001. Backstage we have a large rehearsal room and 1 ground floor dressing room. We also have 3 first-floor dressing rooms
We have an ample-sized Front of House area with wheelchair access, and can accomodate up to 4 wheelchairs per performance. We have fully licensed members and Front of House bars and during performances we sell tea, coffee, confectionary and Bennetts and Nestlé ice cream in the foyer area
We have recently begun showing films in addition to our live performances at the theatre. Thanks to a substantial gift from an anonymous donor, we have managed to purchase a brand new cinema screen and digital projector. Films are usually shown on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month when there is no live theatre in progress. Full film listings, together with those for our theatre productions are available on this website
We have recently begun selling tickets for the majority of our events on-line in association with ticketweb. In order to purchase tickets at any time, day or night, simply click on the appropriate ticketweb logo on our forthcoming productions page
As of November 2003, the Norbury Theatre became a NO SMOKING VENUE
